Although I added the detach (and everything still seems to work), I don't think 
that was the cause of what you see.  I think it's just an artifact of the 
register_callback() function.  Unfortunately, standard streams has no way 
unregister a callback, so I think we're stuck with the (small) leak the way it 
is.  (I think what's it's doing is allocating an internal structure to keep 
track of callbacks.)
