lesspipe.sh is definitely an adequate solution, I just prefer the
consistency of using
a z<COMMAND> program to access a compressed file. That notion works better
with my muscle memory. With lesspipe I need to ensure that environment variable
is set, and also remember that if it is set then I can just run `less log.gz'
