Nat,

The old Yamaha 50-pin SCSI CDRW drives seem to be compatible (at least with
my 8100). I'm not sure they are still being produced, so you may need to
look on eBay. My external unit is actually a LaCie branded drive with a
Yamaha mechanism.

I recommend you get an external CDRW SCSI drive for the following reasons:

1. You may not be able to boot CDs from a CDRW that is non-Apple.
2. If you have your current 4x CD drive and an external unit, you can copy
CDs directly from CDROM to CDRW without swapping, which is convenient.
3. External units often come with a version of Toast "Lite." It is all
I've ever needed. I have used both version 4 and 5. If buying a commercial
package, you need the full Toast program. I'm not sure which version works
with Mac OS 8.6.

With 64 MB of RAM, Mac OS 8.6 is probably better than Mac OS 9.1. However,
if you are careful (and thorough) about disabling unneeded extensions in Mac
OS 9 (including stuff that works but is not that useful such as speech
recognition and multiple users), it may also work fine.

You might want to try this old Connectix product, however...
