Hi again, Geoffrey.
Excuse me for taking so long to reply - I have been out of town all
weekend (today it's holiday here in Spain).

I upgraded the original 128 to the the Bill Gates stated maximum a
person would ever need 512 with in year or 2 after buying it new
right after the super bowl ad, you mention the 512 ke. Do you know if
this would this be normal in a upgrade to from a 128 to a 512.
Just for the records, the sentence is "640 Kb must be enough for
everybody", referring to the limit of 640 Kb of RAM the original IBM PC
had. Many people (me among them) think this is only an urban legend, but
it really doesn't matter too much... Well, back on topic. If you
upgraded just the RAM, then the computer stayed with the same 400 Kb
drive and 64 Kb ROM. At all effects, your computer is a 512k (not "e"),
which only supports MFS.
There are three solutions in this scenario. The easiest one is
getting a SuperDrive compact Mac [...]
Probably the best, although I have the original 128 to 512, it sadly
gave up the ghost a couple of years ago, some mention a new Mother
Board some say power supply,
Oh... What are the symptoms? It may be fixable. You may want to join the
Compact Macs list (http://lowendmac.com/lists/compact.shtml) so we can
discuss its fix there :-) .
Either fix that, preferable or buy an old. Your idea ?? and if buying
old what would you recommend, not a whole lot of $$. It's some
hermit guy who has this property and no way to get a hold of him,
tried everything.
I would try to *both* fix the 512 and buy another compact. The 512 is a
piece of history, but even fixed won't solve the problem, because it's
palinly incompatible with the 6100. So you will need another compact. A
Classic is a good pick - many people disregard it because its lack of
expansion, labelling it a "road Apple", but for data transfer operations
(their internal 1.44 Mb SuperDrive and 40 Mb hard drive are very handy)
or basic word processign it is a very nice machine, and goes very cheap
in eBay. Other options may be the SE and the SE/30 (make sure they have
a SuperDrive!), but they are more expandable and "capable" machines on
other areas, and ussually go more expensive.
My wife says no more collecting till I build a bigger room or house ;/
Well, you are going to get the Classic in order to recover all those old
disks, aren't you? It isn't for your collection ;-) .
The second solution is to downgrade the PowerMac to OS 7.5 or 7.1
(the latter requires a system enabler). [...]
That 6100 G3 runs almost 24/7 when I am there and is amazing, the old
Apple 10 years old, yes some upgrades and oh yes the pram battery. I
have 8.6 running and will not tempt the electrons
I do have stacks of 190s and 5300 PBs
Well, if you depend on the 6100 but have other machines, then do not
touch it ;-) . Many of the pre-G3 PowerMacs are compatible with at least
System 7.5, I think, but you would have to check. Anyway, System 7.5
retains compatiblity with MFS and 400 Kb disks. So it would also solve
your problem.
A hearty thank you and appreciate any thoughts on the above.
And again, you're wellcome! I hope to help you to solve your (our)
problem :-) .
Greetings,
Antonio Rodríguez (Grijan)
