Quite right. I remember playing with a machine which had started life
as a 5400.
The logic board was swapped for one from a 5500/6500. I had both
ethernet and usb
cards running happily, obviously not at the same time!
The only extra you might need is a one slot riser to turn the pci
card through ninety degrees.
I also used OS9 helper, but went as far as 9.2.2.

The only way to get USB out of a 5500 is to use a PCI card with
USB ports. I had one in a 6500 (same logic board) and it worked
well.
