As Hiro mentioned it is strange that both sides have the same mac addr as that will confuse them both. Pick a different one for the VM. If that doesn't work, as an experiment try adding a static arp. sudo arp -s 10.0.0.2 <VM's mac addr> tcpdump right from the start would be useful.
