That sounds probably related to ~2GB of the RAM being reserved for the GPU,
leaving ~6GB available.  Windows shows this in some of its RAM status screens,
e.g. in Task Manager it says 5.9 GB available with 2.1 GB hardware reserved, or
in the system About screen it says the installed RAM is "8GB (5.89 GB usable)".
