Subject: [email protected] is changing to [email protected]
To: [email protected]

Hi Folks,

*[email protected] is being renamed tonight!*

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away we set up
[email protected] as an alternative to [email protected] as the
latter was clogged with spam which caused significant delivery delays and
out of order messages and so on. We set up [email protected] as a
quick move as we already had the list server software in place (we were
using the anti-spam features of the same package) and creating a sub domain
was easy to do at the time.

At the time of the move, I mentioned on list that we would actively
investigate the move from a pure e-mail only list to a combination web-based
forum and e-mail list arrangement (the list members are split as to web
forum vs e-mail list so the only solution that will keep everyone happy is
one that meets both requirements). For a variety of reasons that I won't
rehash - we were let down by a number of suppliers who could not meet
requirements despite us even writing specs for them. The only solution on
the market that will provide the features we want is insanely priced
(USD$20K/server/annum).

That whole experience left the admins pretty demoralised as it was really
like beating your head against a few walls.

Anyway, that was then and despite having given up on the web forum / list
combo (with one eye open for any new software that pops up) - the list
admins resolved on the weekend that we would move the list over to its own
domain at least.

We really want to promote the list as an entity in its own right and try to
grow the subscription base (e.g. getting it in slidedecks at events etc).

*When is the change happening?*
*
*
*Monday the 1st of March, 8:00pm AEST*. Please note that renaming lists is
not a supported feature of mailman. I will attempt to move the list to the
new alias however if mailman does not want to play nicely then I may opt to
delete the old list and create a new one altogether. Don't be alarmed if you
get an unsubscribe notice and a welcome message tonight.

As I will be attempting to make mailman do something it is not designed to
do, there might be some small outage.

*What will the new domain be?*
ozdotnet.com

*Can I still post to the old list address after this change?*
No

*How do I post to the new list?*
Use the address of [email protected]

*How will the new list be different?*
The following will change:

   - The list address (as above).
   - The operations addresses (ozdotnet-owner, ozdotnet-subscribe,
   ozdotnet-unsubscribe, etc)
   - The URL for the self-help portal.

*Are there any software changes?*
Nope. Mailman on CentOS on HyperV on Windows 2008R2 is still the platform.
:)

*Are there any policy changes?*
No. Everything is as before, run by a general rule-of-thumb consensus.
Systems administration and hosting will still be donated by Codify.

The admin list is going to hash out a set of 'house rules' to put up on the
web to consolidate all of the generally accepted rules on the list such as
posting jobs, [OT] posts, Friday posts, and all the other stuff we all
already know and abide by - but is not obvious to new users. This will
provide a handy FAQ to point people at and saves me a bit of time re
explaining what is appropriate and not when people ask me off list.

*I want to have a say!*
If you want to participate in the way any of the lists hosted by Codify are
run, you need to subscribe to [email protected] (send mail to
[email protected]) and be prepared to donate time and effort.
The admin list is not a forum for complaints without offers of fixes/time
(though complaints with offers of fixes/time are welcome! [?])

Any questions, this is the thread.
