Depends on the record type. For example, type=dbbackup deletes db backups physically. If the destination device class is 'file", you can see the backup files will be removed from their path (except the last one).
Another example is STGNEW or STGDELETE. If records of these types are deleted from volume history, their data will remain intact. Only the "history" is deleted.
