Frisner will hold a workshop from July 11-16 giving drummers and musicians the chance to learn traditional Haitian "roots" rhythms. The focus of this series is on ceremonial drumming for Vodou rituals, at which Augustin is considered the best. In this set of classes, students will not only work on the rhythms themselves, but learn to interface with the Houngan/Mambo (priests), Hounjenikon (choral leader) and the Hounsis (ritual dancers). Rhythms to be taught will include the Yanvalou, Mahi and Zepol - all used in the Rada Rite; Nago, Kongo and Ibo rhythms, in addition to drum parts for Djouba, Petwo and Banda. These classes are ensemble workshops, meaning each participant will learn to play individual parts of a larger, more complex multi-drum rhythm. Maestro Frisner will explore the Drums of Vodou in ten two-hour sessions held at the MISTIC, 2267 St. Claude Ave., the only traditional outdoor Peristyle in the United States. Each class will be held daily, once in the morning and again in the evening to accommodate as many schedules as possible. The culmination of these lessons will be on Saturday evening, July 16, when an authentic Vodou ceremony for the Maitresses (female Spirits of the religion) is held. This is the real deal folks! Students will have the opportunity to sit in with members of La Troupe Makandal and demonstrate what they have learned during the week- coordinating their drumming with the traditional Vodou chants, sung in Haitian Kreyol, by members of the Vodou Society. This drum workshop is being held in conjunction with a Vodou dance workshop and dancers will also participate in the ceremony. Included in Frisner's long list of credentials are a personal audience with President Clinton after receiving the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts in 1999, teaching Ethnomusicology at Hunter College at the City University of New York (CUNY) for more than 20 years, community festivals and educational programs incorporating song, drum and dance, several CD's,recordings with jazz artist Kip Hanrahan and the soundtrack to "Beloved", contribution to "The Drums of Vodou", by Lois Wilcken, and more. "I think that New Orleans needs me and I need New Orleans," said Frisner, who started drumming around the age of 7. Now in what he calls his "second run" as a drummer, Frisner is considering a move from the Big Apple to the Big Easy. Because of his exceptional talent, Frisner has been asked to play drums all over the world, and he uses this opportunity to recast Vodou in a more positive light. Once he'd seen New Orleans for the first time, Frisner instantly felt he belonged here. Each two-hour session is $30, but there are discounts for the entire series. Five sessions are $120, and participation in the Vodou ceremony is at no charge. Please note, class size is limited so register early. A $60 deposit is required to pre-register. Payment may be made with cash (in person) or with visa/mastercard at the the time you reserve your space. You may call the Mistic at (504) 944-5772 to book, or make your advanced reservations online at : http://www.neworleansmistic.com/vodoudrums/. For those who are not interested in ensemble drum class or wish personal attention, private lessons with Augustin are again available at $30 an hour. Local students of Dillard, Loyola, Tulane, UNO, SUNO and Xavier can take an additional discount on the drum workshop by presenting their school identification on the first day of class. Call Dee at (504) 944-5772 for more information. Some grants will also be available for those who would really like to take the series but cannot afford it. Ta Ke Ti Na LA --- $225.00 SPECIAL: Register by April 30, 2005 and save $40 --- $185.00 About Ta Ke Ti Na Ta Ke Ti Na is a musical process originated by Austrian percussionist Reinhard Flatischler. It is an opportunity to learn about the world of rhythm and how rhythmic knowledge can open new pathways to learning and self-definition. Learning can be a magical, joyful, and powerful process that allows us to use our innate instincts and our natural abilities to explore the world around us and within us. In ancient cultures, learning music was ascribed special value; it simultaneously encouraged personal, social, and intellectual development, involving both the body and the soul, both emotions and analytic thinking. Learning music was holistic learning at its best. Ta Ke Ti Na combines principles and techniques that cannot be found in any other current education system. Its principles and techniques can be taken far beyond the realm of Ta Ke Ti Na. They can be applied to all kinds of learning situations, and, used in the right way, they can revive our primal fascination with the process of learning. Ta Ke Ti Na philosophy holds that each of us has access to a deeper understanding of our own lives than our waking consciousness can recognize. But this only holds true for the archetypal realm; the world of rhythm archetypes is where the Ta Ke Ti Na learning process begins. Rhythm archetypes are a mirroring of vibrational laws in our consciousness and form the foundation of our rhythmic knowledge and skills. For a child born in an environment filled with rhythm, these archetypes are naturally activated. Over the centuries, the lack of profound and ongoing contact with drums and rhythm has caused much of the western world to lose contact with these fundamental rhythmic laws in music and in nature. The seeds of this knowledge reside within us yet remain ungerminated; to access them, we need only find our way back. Ta Ke Ti Na is a profound rhythm experience wherein the body itself is the instrument. Using simple steps, clapping, and call-and-response singing, we internalize the simultaneous constructions. Through rhythmic physical exploration, we recognize that the tools we use in more analytical processes are not useful for all types of learning. We accept that our failures are equally useful as our successes, and we learn to exult in falling in and out of rhythm. Founded by Austrian percussionist Reinhard Flatischler in 1970, Ta Ke Ti Na is an outgrowth of Reinhard's decade of musical studies and research in Cuba, Brazil, Korea, India, Bali and other countries. The Ta Ke Ti Na process is built on Rhythm Archetypes--a mirroring of rhythmic laws and universal images in our unconscious and a genetic imprint passed down through all time. These archetypes have been uncovered by every culture on earth. In Ta Ke Ti Na, these laws have been synthesized into a coherent process that enables everyone to access his or her own rhythmic ability. *************************************************************** ABOUT ZORINA WOLF Zorina Wolf is Palo Alto California's local African drum teacher and promoter/organizer of the USA Ta Ke Ti Na teacher training. New beginners may purchase an instrument from MBIRA in advance to use at Camp, or buy one when they arrive (MBIRA is supporting a number of wonderful instrument makers in Zimbabwe). But it does so while bringing its own broad personality to the table, drawing upon the rich amalgam of its member's varied musical backgrounds to make its rhythm-steeped point. In the short period of time that has transpired since the group's inception, World-beat & Jamband lovers alike have latched on the primary ingredient behind this band's broad appeal: Fulanis Afrobeat Ensemble simply brings the house down every opportunity it gets! Melding tightly crafted arrangements and nuances of jazz-harmony with propulsive, high-energy grooves, for the innocent bystander, any quaint visit to a Fulanis show quickly becomes an all-out body-maneuvering experience. Featuring traditional "afrobeat" instrumentation, the group's four-piece rollicking horn section is manned by Aaron Bennett (Wadada Leo Smith) on baritone saxophone, Damien Masterson on tenor saxophone, Greg Dessen (Albino!) on trumpet, and Lech Wierzynski also on trumpet. The band's rhythm section is manned by bassist Lucky Otis (son of 70's neo-soul prodigy Shuggie Otis, & grandson of rhythm & blues legend Johnny Otis), John Branch on rhythm guitar, and Matt Heulitt (Zigaboo Modeliste) on tenor guitar, keyboardist Simon Rochester (Bizar Bizaar), trap drummer John Arkin (Eric Crystal), and dancer/percussionist Tonya Powell.
