Research grants for AGI are very hard to come by in the US, and from what I
hear, elsewhere in the world also

So, as a prof, you would probably be faced with the choice of

-- getting no research grants, or struggling to get small ones

versus

-- getting moderate sized research grants for work peripherally related to
AGI

HOWEVER, I do think there are several major plusses to getting a PHD

1)
You can get paid to spend 1/2 your time doing AGI research (the rest on
teaching or committeework or non-AGI research)

2)
In every context you enter into, your AGI ideas will be taken more seriously
than otherwise

3)
You will learn how to communicate your ideas in a manner more acceptable to
the mainstream of academia & industry

4)
If you study in a decent department, you'll have lots of interesting
conversations with smart researchers, and get a lot of different
perspectives into your head
