Do you have the full kernel sources installed or just the kernel
headers?  The full sources are required to compile ALSA.

Oops..I only had the kernel header. I thought it was sufficient. I intalled the kernel source and I had to build it. Then alsa-driver compiled without any problem. Lee, Thanks a lot :-)
Now I am able to play sound in totem. But when I open realplayer it says device is used by another application. How to share the soundcard with more than one program?
