Update: I used this because of the "sound device blocked after first
call" bug with Skype. Details here [1]. However, I've since decided to
go with workaround#1 as listed on that page:
cd /usr/share/skype/sound
mv hangup.wav hangup.wav-disabled
This means I can launch Skype "normally". It is now configured to use
/dev/dsp2 and is working great!
One more thing - after getting all this working I didn't want to lose
any of the settings so I ran:
/sbin/alsactl store 2
...which I believe stores the current settings for sound card 2.
Presumably these are restored on reboot?
Anyway, all is now working well.
