Well, it's impossible to turn a stereo source into discrete 5.1 - of
course there will have to be some copying.

Please read Takashi Iwai's posts in alsa-devel archive from 4/7/2006,
titled "Topics around surround", "Yet another round around surround",
and the entire thread "Changes over dmix: 1.0.11rc4 and future" starting
3/27/2006. These explain the new surround plugins but the LFE filtering
issue is still open.
Of course you need ALSA 1.0.11 for these to work.
