I too have a motherboard (ASRock 939NF4G-SATA2) that reports via lspci as an
nVidia MCP51 AC97 and using Fedora Core 5 auto installed the snd-intel8x0.
I have managed to get sound working a number of times but not sure what the
particular sequence needs to be as it stops working and reports as below.....
I also have a FusionHDTV5 Gold Plus capture card (pci) installed, along with a
nVidia 6600GT graphics card (on board card disabled in bios). AMD 4400+ dual
core proc.
sound auto detect always shows the MCP51 AC97 chipset but when its not working
the play button gives nothing....

it appears the device drivewrs are loaded but the /proc/asound/modules
and /dev/snd show only the TV capture card.
Where to from here?
What's the missing link? All my research so far indicates that all should
work, as i've done all the steps suggested.......
How does udev update the /proc/asound/ and /dev/snd/ ??? is this where I need
to look?
