No. It started on an application upgrade that ended up doing a kernel
and multiple package upgrades too.
I didn't mean to blame the kernel upgrade but obviously wrote it that
way - sorry.

Having downgraded libasound2 to 1.0.11-3 (Thanks Koef) the problem has
gone and I now get :

bao:~# alsaplayer /everything/music/cdrip/INXS/Kick/01\ Guns\ In\ The\
Sky.mp3
FIXME: f_unsynchronization is set.Please contact alsaplayer team.
Filename: /everything/music/cdrip/INXS/Kick/01 Guns In The Sky.mp3

dmesg contains:
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:11.5[C] -> Link [ALKC] -> GSI 22 (level,
low) -> IRQ 19
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:11.5 to 64
ALSA device list:
#0: VIA 8237 with ALC655 at 0xc000, irq 19

and the sound is working fine via the /dev/dsp emulation.

Anything else that could help?

David
