VIA makes the only onboard chipset that supports hardware mixing.  All
HDA intel stuff has no hardware mixing.

Doesnt that suck.. its  like the winmodem thing all over again :(

I'm not sure if there are any devices that support hardware mixing via
SPDIF.

my via system at work (av8-3rd eye) does exactly what i need, but i really want a core2..what about pci express sound cards ? the core 2 duo boards i have seen have at most 3 pci slots which I will be using for dvb cards, but they do have pci express slots, are there any supported pci express cards?

(Lack of hardware mixer is a hardware limitation not an ALSA bug)

Indeed., im not complaining about alsa for a second, its brilliant! i really like the way it works :)
