Subject: Pan_Am_Games:_Canada's_Softball_Team_Opens_with_win_over_A FORIMMEDIATE RELEASE July26th, 2007 PanAm Games: Canada’s Softball Team Opens with win over Argentina (Cityof Rock, Brazil) – After another delay caused by poor field conditionsearlier in the day, the Canadian Women’s Softball was finally able to geton the field and open their Pan American Games schedule last night, defeatingArgentina by a 5-2 score. Both teams were fired up to start the game and thiscertainly showed as they both got off to an early start on the scoreboard. Inthe top of the first inning, Argentina took advantage of having their first twobatters reach base and was able to bring them both to the plate to score on atwo run single, giving them an early 2-0 lead. However, Canada did not wasteany time in their half of the inning, as Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) andJennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) hit back-to-back doubles to bring inCanada’s first run, but Salling was thrown out at third trying to stretchher hit into a triple. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) then followed with a doubleof her own, and later scored on an error before Erin Mclean (Whitby, ON) wasable to drive in another run with a single, giving Canada a 3-2 lead. Canadianstarting pitcher Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) settled in after the firstinning, pitching six scoreless innings while only allowing two hits in theseventh inning. She was able to make quick work of Argentina the rest of theway, only allowing three runners to reach base while striking out nine batters. Thered and white was able to add two more runs in the bottom of the third inning,as Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) and Noemie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC) bothreached base before McLean delivered another RBI single, bringing Bradley in toscore and Marin too on a throwing error. Matthews,Lawrick and McLean each had two hits for Canada, while Salling, Marin, ErinCumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) and Kristy Odamura (Richmond, BC) each added one oftheir own. Endébut de première manche, l’Argentine a pris avantage d’avoir euleurs deux premiers frappeurs sur les sentiers alors qu’ils ont étécapable de pousser les deux coureuses au marbre sur un simple, leur donnantainsi une avance de 2-0. Elle a été capable de s’en sortir rapidement à plusieursreprises, laissant seulement trois frappeurs de l’Argentine à se rendresur les buts alors qu’elle a retiré neuf frappeurs au bâton. Lerouge et blanc a été capable d’ajouter deux autres points en fin detroisième manche, alors qu’Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) et Noémie Marin(Acton-Vale, QC) ont toutes les deux été capables de se rendre sur les sentiersavant que McLean a produit un autre point avec un simple pour pousser Bradleyau marbre et Marin aussi sur une erreur.
