Grand slam, three-run blast power NL over NB at Junior Men's

SUMMERSIDE - A grand slam and three run blast capped off a seven
run, third inning as Kelly’s Pub Canadians of Newfoundland and
Labrador routed New Brunswick representative Miramichi Vics 9-2
in day two play at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior
Men’s fast pitch championships here in Summerside.
The damage got done in the third after a pair of walks first
to Felix Squires then shortstop Justin Gill (1-4) followed with
a single. Stephen Strapp (0-2) was then walked to load the bases
bringing NL slugger Jon Kane to the plate.
Kane (1-2) made no mistake tagging NB pitcher Jeremy Regan for
a long home run that went about 300 feet, scoring all four runs.
The onslaught continued when third basemen Shane O’Brien (0-1,
walk) was hit by a pitch and then Matt Hill (0-1) was walked.
Ken Gosse (1-3, ) sent the first offering from relief pitcher
Brandon Gorman out of the park to make it 8-0.
NL pinch hitter Mark Lewis would be walked in the fourth and
later score on an error by Vic center-fielder Matt Houcy for
the defending champions final run of the game.
New Brunswick got their first two runs of the tournament, scoring
one each in the fourth and fifth innings. The Vics had nine hits
off NL starter Wayne Bruce while NL had just six hits.
Houcy (1-3, two RBI), Jake O’Neil (2-3), Robert Cogswell (2-2),
Shane Benjamin (1-3, run scored, triple) did the damage at the
dish.
Bruce went five innings allowing two runs on nine hits and fanning
five for the win. Regan took the loss allowing seven runs on
three hits, walking four. Brandon Gorman gave up one run on one
hit in the two batters he faced before Benjamin finished it off
allowing a run on two while walking two.
