Team Canada picks up twoSoftball shutouts in opening day

 

August 11, 2007

 

BANGKOK, Thailand(CIS) - The Canadian women's softball team opened
its competition today with apair of 9-0 shutouts to move into
top spot in Pool A at the 24thSummer Universiade. 

 

Host Thailand and Italyboth fell to the Canadians in just five
innings as a result of the run-aheadrule shortened game (ahead
by seven runs after five innings). 

 

After reaching thepodium at both the World Cup of Softball in
Oklahoma and the Pan American Gamesin Rio de Janeiro earlier
this season, the team is looking to win their thirdmedal.

 

"It's our team'sgoal to receive three medals in a season," said
head coach Lori Sippel."We understand it will take one game and
one pitch at a time in order toachieve it." 

 

After scoring threequick runs in the first inning against Thailand,
Canada didn't slow up addingfive in the second. Winnipeg's Ashley
Lanz started for the red and whiteallowing only two hits in the
game, while striking out nine. 

 

In the second game ofthe double-header, it took three innings
for the Canadian bats to get swinging.Canada picked up three
runs in the second, followed by one in the third andfive in the
fifth to finish the off their opponents. 

 

"We saw fourpitchers today," said Sippel.  "Anytime you can get
through that manypitchers in a game, you are doing good things
with the bat. I'm really pleasedwith today's performance. We
knew it was going to be a long day as a result ofthe double-header,
but the team adjusted well." 

 

Robin Mackin of Newmarket,Ont. had the call in the second game,
pitching all five innings, while givingup only three hits and
striking out five.

 

"I think ourteam did a good job making adjustments from the first,"
said Mackin."Once we broke it open in the third, we put the mark
on the board and webroke it open easily from there." 

 

Offensively JenniferSalling of Port Coquitlam, B.C. led the squad
with five hits in the twocontests including two triples. 

 

The team competesagainst South Africa (0-2) tomorrow who lost
to Chinese Taipei 18-2 and Thailand7-0. Game time is at 2:00
p.m. (local). The Canadians close out pool play onMonday against
Chinese Taipei at 10:00 a.m. (local). 

 

About theSummer Universiade

 

The SummerUniversiade is an international multi-sport event that
takes place every twoyears, and is second only to the Olympic
Games in the number of participatingathletes and countries. The
Universiade is open to competitors between the agesof 17 and
28 in the year of the Games who are full-time students at apost-secondary
institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated froma
post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.

 

The 24th SummerUniversiade to be held Aug. 8-18, 2007 in Bangkok,
Thailand will feature 10,000participants including 8,000 student-athletes
from 141 countries competing in18 sports.

 

Canada is sending itslargest delegation to Bangkok with 309 participants
including 208student-athletes competing in the following sports:
athletics badminton,basketball, diving, golf, judo, rhythmic
gymnastics, shooting, soccer,softball, swimming, table tennis,
taekwondo, and volleyball
