ALBERTON - The first day of the 2007 Tignish Credit Union Midget
Girls Eastern Canadian championships turned into a pitching clinic
- at least for two teams, with opposite results.

Charlie Johnston threw a complete game, three hitter mowing down
nine in leading Cornwall Cougars over Saint John Selects (N.B.
1) while Shubenacadie Stealer ace Megan Brown put on a show her
self as the righthander allowed just two hits while fanning seven,
but her Nova Scotia champions squad fell 2-0 to New Brunswick
2, Au P’tit Mousse of Lameque, N.B.

The host Prince County Island Petroleum Heat earned the other
victory in the three game opener, an 8-4 win over Ontario 3 representative
from Stratford. here Thursday.

BROWN THROWS HEAT FOR SHUBIE, COMES UP EMPTY

In the final game of the day, Brown deserved a much better fate.

Brown threw a stellar game with the only three hits resulting
in the game’s lone runs of the game in a 2-0 defeat to the New
Brunswick two representative, Au p’tit Mousse of Lameque, N.B.

The hard throwing righthander also fanned seven batters (including
five of the game’s first seven outs). The Nova Scotia champion
Stealers managed just three hits of their own behind Brown’s
performance and only threatened once, in the top of the seventh.

France Mazzerolle (2-2) drove home both runs in the third and
fifth innings, scoring Julie Chaisson (1-2, walk) on both occasions.
Mazzerolle and Chaisson each doubled in the game.

Kaitlyn Parker (2-3) and Jenanne Farrell (1-3) were the big bats
for Shubenacadie

It wouldn’t have stayed as close if not for a diving play by
Shubie second absmen Annie Blois in the bottom of the sixth.
Blois dove to her right, robbing a sure single and possibly extra
bases from N.B.’s Marie-Christine Ferron, then flipped while
on her back to get the out at first and keep it 2-0 heading to
the final inning.

Maryse Richard recorded the win striking out four in seven innings
work. Brown walked two in the complete game loss.

ATKINSON POWERS COUGARS

Elisha Atkinson hit an inside the park, two-run home run that
sparked the Rachel Arsenault-coached Cornall Cougars to the shutout
win.

Charlie Johnston helped her own cause with a 2-for-3 batting
summary that saw her get a double. Pam Beaton (1-3, RBI) also
was tops at the dish.

Kat McKinnon (1-3), Jenica Buchannan (1-2) led the Saint John
attack.

Johnston went the distance, fanning nine giving up three hits
and walking one. Losing pitcher Alecia O’Briehn went six innings,
striking out six allowing five runs on eight hits.

HEAT OPEN WITH WIN

The Heat and Ontario three-representative were tied up 4-4 into
the sixth inning when the bats came alive for the Summerside-based
Heat.

Taylore Matheson (1-3) scored Karen Gallant, pinch running for
Sarah Kennedy, from second base with the eventual game winning
run. Matheson would later be plated to score the Heat’s third
run of the four run inning.

Winning pitcher Ashley Praught led Prince County at the dish
going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Miranda McHugh (1-4,
two RBI) and Natalie Derasp (1-3, RBI, two runs scored) were
also hot for the Heat.

Stratford was led by Rachal Fountain (2-4, two runs scored),
Kelly Glover (1-3, RBI, runs scored) and Michelle Mavity (1-4)
also contributed.

Praught threw a complete game surrendering four hits while walking
one and striking out four. Jenalee Shean took the loss going
three innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits, walking
one with two strikeouts. Tonya Pearson went four innings allowing
five hits, four runs and walking three.
