Solid Weekend For Gee-Gees
The University of Ottawa Gee-Gees softball team continued their
commitment to the community this a series of events designed
to thank those who have supported them over their 6 year history.
On Friday night the team co-hosted “Support Our Troops” night
where they joined the Carleton Ravens in wearing special red
uniforms to honour Canadian Troops fighting abroad and at home.
The Gee-Gees visited the Afghanistan exhibit at the Canadian
War Museum on Friday night to gain an appreciation of the sacrifice
Canadian soldiers have made to support others.
The Gee-Gees got off to a quick start against the Ravens and
never looked back. Rookie, Emily Ernst took the ball and was
lights out for 6 innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits. The Gee-Gees
offense was rolling en route to a 12-0 win in a game stopped
after 6 innings.
The team was honoured to lead a “Bridge to the Future” clinic
for 18 minor athletes from the Ottawa area from 9-11:30 on Saturday
morning. All 13 Gee-Gees were in attendance to teach softball
skills to minor athletes of all ages. They took their lessons
to the field and jumped to an 8-7 win over Laurier in the first
game of a double-header. It was not the most impressive win of
the season as key errors from both teams led to several unearned
runs. A solid start from Elissa Sivel kept the Gee-Gees in the
game and Jillian Taylor picked up the save in relief. The second
game was much better for the fans of the team who stuck around
from the clinic to watch the games. Jill Taylor took the ball
for the start and was extremely impressive leading the team to
an 8-5 win. The Lancers pushed across 3 runs in the bottom of
the 7th behind a Jody Waltrho triple. The Gee-Gees offense was
in high gear as all athletes reached base with a hit.
The Gee-Gees welcomed the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday and sent
Jillian Taylor to the circle once again. She had a very strong
start, throwing a 3 hit shutout as the Gee-Gees raced to a 4-0
win. Timely hitting and excellent short game were the stories
of the day as the Gee-Gees displayed their team speed with several
stolen bases and well-executed bunts. The second game was more
of the same as the team raced to a 8-1 victory in the second
game against the Warriors. Emily Ernst once again was very strong
allowing her first run in a Gee-Gee uniform in the 7th inning
en route to a 8-1 victory. Back to back triples from Laura Skiperis
and Erin Mulvhill along with 3 RBI's from Lauren Dufort delivered
the crushing blows.
The team is back at home next week to play host to Carleton,
last years Silver Medalists the University of Toronto Varsity
Blues and the undefeated Guelph Gryphons. This will be an excellent
test for the young Gee-Gees as they continue to strive towards
the playoffs.
Come watch the Gee-Gees play Carleton on Friday night at 7:30
at the RA Center in Ottawa.
