Black Sox make winning start to Commonwealth Championship
Wednesday January 25th 2006

The power hitting from the New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox has proved to be much for South Africa to handle tonight in the opening game of the Commonwealth Championship in Melbourne, Australia.

With a 7-0 score line in their favour the NZCT Black Sox have run out convincing winners while also sending out a message to the other two sides in the competition Australia and Samoa. The NZCT Black Sox wrapped up the game in just five innings with the mercy rule invoked as the Kiwi side held a seven run advantage.

The NZCT Black Sox opened the scoring in their first at bat when lead off hitter Thomas Makea picked up a walk and scored on a fielder’s choice.

The world champion NZCT Black Sox extend their lead in the top of the third inning when Fabian Makea singled to left field and then stole second base before coming home on a safe hit by Nathan Nukunuku. Next to cross home plate was the Kiwi vice captain Nukunuku who scored when Travis Wilson pounded the ball to the left field fence for a triple.

In the fifth inning the NZCT Black Sox delivered the killer blow scoring four runs courtesy of a single to Nathan Nukunuku, a walk to Travis Wilson, a triple off the bat of Patrick Shannon and a home run powered over the left field fence by Brad Rona.

While the NZCT Black Sox took control of the game with the bat the Kiwi team was just as strong defensively. Doing the job on the mound was Hutt Valley’s Jeremy Manley making his international NZCT Black Sox debut.

Manley was in commanding form on the mound he pitched four innings and faced 13 batters taking seven strikeouts while giving up one walk and no hits. NZCT Black Sox captain Jarrad Martin was introduced into the game in the bottom of the fifth inning as a relief pitcher. He faced five batters taking three strikeouts while giving up one hit and one walk.

While the NZCT Black Sox pitchers had control of the game the same could not be said for the South African hurlers. Grant Oliver was on the mound for South Africa giving up eight hits and two walks while taking four strikeouts. Francoise Smit replaced Oliver on the mound in the fifth inning and faced just one batter.

The NZCT Black Sox will be looking to continue their winning run on day two of the championship tomorrow when they take on the home side Australia at 7pm (NZ time) followed by Samoa at 9.30pm (NZ time). During the championship all teams will play each other twice before the finals playoffs on Saturday and Sunday.
