I just gave up and put the next tape in.  It seems to be working now.

Is there a way to check to see how far along amflush is?

PPS check your 'taperscan' setting: default is 'traditional'.
You might want to set it to 'oldest'

See man amanda-taperscan. With 'oldest' you get:

"An acceptable volume is a reusable volume, a new labeled volume or an
unlabeled volume that can be labeled according to autolabel"...
