If you stop amavisd-new, the folders should disappear. If some folder 
don't disappear, then amavisd-new usually left them there because of 
"PRESERVING EVIDENCE" of some other error (like file() utility bug, 
etc.). Try greping your amavisd-new log files for "PRESERVED".

IMHO, the right procedure would be to identify the reason for preserving 
tempdir. Otherwise I believe stopping amavisd-new, cleaning tempdir and 
starting amavisd-new would be just fine...
