As a follow up on this, here is what i did to get rid of the error.

1. I upgraded perl to 5.8.10 the server was running version 5.8.9 ( it wasnt
as seamless as i thought because i had to reinstall a couple of modules)
2. Increased the number of lockers on the config file
/var/amavis/db/DB_CONFIG appropriately according to the server laverage mail
load.

So far i have not been getting any errors.
