Thank you. I have checked the items that I am displaying, and all of them contain tags like this:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/> In every case, the charset is specified as "utf-8" or "UTF-8". Apparently, this is not sufficient to cause the text to be interpreted as containing unicode.
