While it's slow enough to start that one can be forgiven for killing it thinking it's hung, it's no where near an hour to start!
While I would certainly highly recommend more memory, I myself run Windows 7 with 4 GB of RAM on an Intel T7600 processor, not much faster than yours, but I just timed it at under two minutes to fully launch, with my system being far from idle (Eclipse, web browser with many tabs including GMail, Microsoft Word, Emacs, a rather memory-and- CPU hogging game client). So I'd look to there being something wrong with your environment. I doubt Ubuntu vs Windows is the issue! Is everything on a local filesystem? Do you have processes competing heavily for the CPU, memory, or disk? Do any errors show up in the LogCat view? Do you have any firewall software that might be interfering with it, perhaps because it listens on a TCP port?
