Don't know if I qualify as an "expert" but -
Mail messages can contain a header, Message-ID, whose value uniquely identifies that particular message.
Message ID values can be used to cross-reference related messages to one another.
Specifically, there are two headers, "In-Reply-To" and "References", which may contain the message ID values of original (replied to) and referenced (e.g. a mailing list thread) messages.
