Ok, I found the problem and it is simple...   I needed vibrate
permission in the manifest!  Am I really the only noob making this
mistake though...

Anyway, just add:

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.VIBRATE"  />

inside the manifest tag (same level as <application>) and you are
golden.
