Thanks very much Mark & Streets of Boston. It's taken me a while to get a grasp of the whole application lifecycle - especially once you throw Services into the mix, but I think I'm starting to get it! :)
System.exit() definitely gets me out of the hole for now. Which is great - but as you say we'll still have to fix up the statics to get an automated restart up and running.
