This is even more messed up than I thought: It seems as if on the HTC Magic, the constant values backing the different IME options are shifted to the right by one (so to speak). That is, if you look at the different options as described in the API docs, then for example setting actionSearch on the text view will do exactly that on a G1, but will result in actionNext on the G2. Similarly, setting actionSearch will result in actionSend on the Magic being activated... weirdness!
