I found an example in http://dl.google.com/io/2009/pres/W_0300_CodingforLife-BatteryLifeThatIs.pdf (slide 10) of detecting 3G connections, and it seems to be working in my app. For other connection types, I imagine you could just simulate the different networks via DDMS and debug the return values yourself.
