Yeah, that's true in most cases. My images actually started out at about 12KB (8-bit PNG) which looked great before uploading them. The conversion "magic" on the server actually made them larger (downloads as 21KB) but with all the ugly dithering.
Re-uploading them as 24-bit PNG (25KB) gave much better results (downloads as 25KB).
