NeoOffice gets $25,000 donation
-------------------------------
[Contributed by Adam Moore]
"A very generous individual has stepped forward and given a US$25,000
donation to NeoOffice/J. This much needed donation plus the many small
donations received over the last few months provides enough funds for
me to work full time on upgrading NeoOffice/J to use Java 1.4.

Upgrading NeoOffice/J to Java 1.4 is one of the critical tasks that
must be done in order for NeoOffice/J to run on Apple's upcoming
Intel-based machines. With this donation, one of the three critical
tasks for creating a Mac Intel verison of NeoOffice/J is now fully
funded.

Not only do I want to thank our generous donor, but I would also like
to thank the hundreds of people who have donated to NeoOffice/J. The
many small donations that NeoOffice/J has received are important and,
without them, working full time on NeoOffice/J would not be possible."

- OOo Guidebook has been released on the Internet

Some OOo Guidebooks have been published in Japan. When I searched within
the Amazon.co.jp, I found 11 OOo guidebooks. Two of them are released
full pages on the Internet. Both of their licenses are PDL.

Yutaka Kachi updated the Guidebook for the version 1.0 to 1.1 and
released it. It is named OOo
OpenText. There is an SXW file and a PDF file.
IPA(Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan) sponsored
production of this document.

Members of OOo Community in Japan wrote ÒOOo Official User's GuideÓ. It
used to be a commercial book. This time they released it in PDF file and
users can use it for free.

- ITmedia 2.0 Review and an interview with Sun's Tokyo Office

In Japan, expectations for the version 2.0 is growing. Even casual PC
magazines, which do not offer OSS coverage usually, introduce the
version 2.0 together with the FireFox these days.

ITmedia (http://www.itmedia.co.jp/) is a representative Japanese IT
Webzine. It serialized a review of version 2.0. and its title is Ò the
standard of office applications OOo will change Ó. This review
introduces new functions of the version 2.0 and examines compatibility
with Microsoft Office.

The standard of office applications OOo will change
http://www.itmedia.co.jp/enterprise/special/0507/ooo2/

In the first review, ITmedia provided an interview with Naoyuki Ishimura
and Shigo Takamatsu of Sun's Tokyo Office. Its title is ÒSun's viewpoint
about the Open Office.org community. Ishimura is involved in
internationalization of StarOffice and proceeds the TCM test with the
OOo community.

The below is Ishimura's comment regarding collaboration with the community.
ÒIt was meaningful. Although it was a test for localization, we could
find problems concerning other than localization too. We could find
various bugs so the collaboration worked well. It worked smoothly
because people who join the OpenOffice.org community have considerable
interest in OpenOffice.org.Ó

- OOo add-on to do DB operation by Fio:calc was released

Fio is a plug-in to operate a database by Calc. Makoto Ono is
developing it. We can use Calc's cells to describe SQL statements and
display data. We can connect to a database by a standard-equipped
data-source, however, if we can operate the database by Calc's cells we
don't have to remember how to operate the data-source. Fio made this
possible. When you connect a database to do your routine, you can query
data by open a worksheet and run a macro.

- WiseKnot, a Japanese SI Company, adopted OpenOffice.org

Wise Knot does System Integrator business by OSS. They reduced their
licensing fee significantly since they had adopted OpenOffice.org.

In the spring of this year, WiseKnot increased their staff members from
50 to more than 200 to expand their business. All of the new staff
members use OpenOffice.org. Only staff members who need to exchange
document files with other companies use Microsoft Office. The adoption
of OpenOffice.org reduced the licensing fee for Microsoft by 8 million
yen and WiseKnot could supply their staff members with high-performance
desk top computers.

WiseKnot plans to distribute OpenOffice.org to their customers as
specific examples of open source software.

Linux pumps up fitness retailer's network, desktops
---------------------------------------------------
""Twenty percent of our employees are already running OpenOffice.org on
Windows. Our first task was to train them on OpenOffice.org; then we
will switch to Linux." Converting employees to OpenOffice.org brought
formatting problems when converting files from Word format. "When
people first used OpenOffice.org, the formatting was somewhat
distorted," Scott says. "We sat down and worked out the differences
with them. Now we have everyone first create their documents in
OpenOffice.org." Other than that, the migration hasn't caused any
problems. Says Scott, "It's been pretty easy.""

Kenosha Finds Big Savings in Linux
----------------------------------
""For the most part, everybody is happy," says Schall, who adds that
OpenOffice integrates smoothly with Microsoft Word and Excel documents.

A key benefit of using open source applications such as OpenOffice and
the Firefox Latest News about Firefox Web browser is that they are
platform independent, says Tig Kerkman, Kenosha's network
administrator.

"So my users can download OpenOffice for free and use it at home on
whatever hardware they have," he says."

Linux in Government: Winning in Australia Against Microsoft TNG
---------------------------------------------------------------
"I do not see any legitimate process that Microsoft can leverage to
attack Linux,
at least without causing themselves serious revenue damage. Or without
risking
mutually-assured patent destruction from LinuxÕs supporters. So, they may
eventually bundle a free mini copy of Microsoft Office with future versions
of Windows, as a way to keep the combination of Linux and OpenOffice.org off
most desktops. But this will only serve to wipe off 40% of their profit by
gutting Office sales Ð never a good look to Wall Street."

Studies & Reports

Open Source halts ICT brain drain
---------------------------------
"In contrast to this, development of Open Source software generally
happens in a very decentralised manner that lowers the barrier to entry
for smaller companies who want to provide a niche service or operate in
a local market. For example, a business which wants to provide a
locally-supported, professional-grade office suite consisting of a word
processor, spreadsheet, and presentation program could build an
offering around OpenOffice.org using local talent, and provide
consulting and support services to companies wanting to roll it out
across their workforce. There is absolutely nothing to stop that
provider from delivering a service and level of expertise that is on
par with or better than anyone else in the world, even though they
didn't single-handedly write the OpenOffice.org suite."

Make Room for Linux Apps
------------------------
"A better option is to simply run OpenOffice or StarOffice on your
Windows clients and use the native file formats of these applications.
That's right: both OpenOffice and StarOffice have Windows binaries and
run just fine on Windows. This may not always be possible, as your
company is likely already deeply entrenched in Microsoft Office and not
likely to switch anytime soon."

the mean time, it sounds like many employees still multi-boot."

FOSS word processors compared: OOo Writer, AbiWord, and KWord
-------------------------------------------------------------
OpenOffice.org receives most of the attention among free and open source
(FOSS)
office suites, but users shouldn't forget that free software includes at
least
two other word processors: AbiWord, part of a projected GNOME Office,
and KWord,
part of the KOffice suite. From their inception, both have been playing
catch-up
with OpenOffice.org's Writer. But now, after several years of development,
AbiWord and KWord are both reaching early maturity. How do Writer, AbiWord,
and KWord compare?

Windows vs. Linux/OSS today, part 2: Linux experts see strong server,
weak desktop
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"OpenOffice is a great product. I have used it, and in many ways I
prefer its word processor to Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, it has not
been publicized as a real alternative to Word in the same way that
Linux has been promoted as a real alternative to Windows. Largely
because of this, the product is no real threat to Microsoft."

The Guardian - Worldwide wonder
-------------------------------
[Guardian newspaper leader]
"Although, contrary to the instincts of its early protagonists, the web
has long since been colonised by commerce, it still nurtures its
founding community spirit. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the
startling success of the open source movement which enables enthusiasts
and professionals all over the world to work together from remote
locations to produce services that are freely available for anyone with
a computer linked to the internet. The thousands of products so far
released include the Linux operating system (a free alternative to
Microsoft's pervasive Windows), OpenOffice (an alternative to
Microsoft's Word and Excel) and Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia,
with well over a million entries written entirely by its readers."

Back to the fold

it allows Microsoft to pick out high-profile adopters of open source
and make offers that are not just attractive but actually illegal to
refuse."

Sharing files between OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office
---------------------------------------------------------
"Even if you're the most dedicated OpenOffice.org (OOo) user in the
world, sooner or later you'll be asked to share files with someone
using Microsoft Office. Some free software advocates refuse outright,
or suggest outputting to HTML, PDF, or RTF formats, but these aren't
always options -- especially if your boss is the one doing the asking.
However, with a few preparations and a sense of what works and what
doesn't, you can usually share files with Microsoft Office users with a
minimum of headaches on both sides. Here's how."

OOo Off the Wall: Recovering Hidden Treasures
---------------------------------------------
"It's a little-known secret, but what you see in the interface of
version 2.0 of OpenOffice.org isn't what you have to settle for. Hidden
throughout version 2.0 are dozens of pieces of functionality, each
available in a few seconds by customizing the menus, toolbars or
keyboard shortcuts of OpenOffice.org applications. Some of these hidden
treasures are small tools useful only to users with certain work
habits. However, perhaps the most useful customizations are older
versions of tools that have been redesigned in version 2.0. In several
cases, these older versions are designed better than their
replacements. And, if nothing else, they often are more familiar."

Competitive/Market Info
#########################################################################

Microsoft charging more, giving more?
-------------------------------------
"But likely to prove controversial is Microsoft intention to charge
users an additional "premium" client access licenses (CAL) to use these
higher-end versions of Office and Windows. Ballmer and other executives
were light on specifics today, although in the Office market at least
Microsoft seems to be going beyond its current high-end edition of
Office Professional Edition, which is priced at $388.49 per copy.
...
"We will... introduce higher-value versions of existing products that
really help us drive new growth and new value. We did that with the
Professional edition of our Windows product, and it drove literally
billions of dollars of revenue growth versus the home version,"
Ballmer said.
...
Microsoft's decision to introduce more SKUs and charge higher prices,
though, will expose the company to more accusations from competitors
that is gouging customers while IT budgets are tight. Sun Microsystems
has been pushing StarOffice as a low-priced, subscription-based
alternative to Office to help customers overcome the pricing issue."

http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2005/07/28/microsoft_skus/

TextMaker 2005 Beta - now with OpenDocument compatibility
---------------------------------------------------------
"TextMaker 2005 also offers compatibility with the open source office suite
OpenOffice.org and the industry standard OpenDocument (nŽe OASIS) file
format."

And as reported on the company's site itself:
http://www.softmaker.com/english/tmw05_en.htm

[Opinion] How does 'that company' treat free software?
------------------------------------------------------
[Opinion piece written by Richard Stallman]
"Several years ago Sun bought StarOffice, a proprietary office suite.
Sun released a version of this program as free software, under the name
OpenOffice.org . This greatly extended the capabilities of free
software. However, Sun continues distributing StarOffice as a
proprietary program. The two are not the same, so there is a certain
tendency for OpenOffice to act like demoware for proprietary software.
Nonetheless, it is very useful in and of itself. It is a major
contribution with a cloud over part of it."

ThinkFree's Office Alternative For Linux
----------------------------------------
"The original ThinkFree application suite was released five years ago.
Today, the company announced its latest version 3 in a Linux (define)
edition. In addition to a price of $49.95, ThinkFree is laying claim to
having the best compatibility with Microsoft Office of any program to
date for Linux, Windows and Macintosh users with an interface similar
to Microsoft's. The software also imports and exports Microsoft Office
files."

Ballmer buffs up Microsoft Office
---------------------------------
"At VoleÕs annual meeting with analysts, Ballmer mimed his plans to
build a range of Microsoft products entirely for high-end corporate
use. According to Reuters, in Ballmer's sights are networked servers
for heavy corporate use and a more impressive Office package, which
will be dubbed Office Premium."

Microsoft hopes new Office hits suite spot
------------------------------------------
""There's an increasing realization customers have the 80-20 rule, in
that 80% of their employees are using 20% of the existing software,"
said Simon Schouten who is desktop sales manager for Sun Microsystems
for the U.K. and Ireland.

Consequently, when the time comes for small businesses to upgrade their
computers, they may decide to look for cheaper alternatives to
Microsoft Office, providing fewer features but using less resources."
