OpenOffice.org announces template and clipart design contest
------------------------------------------------------------
" Users of Open Office.org's open source productivity suite will have a
chance to win cash and prizes by submitting template and clipart designs
in a contest sponsored by OpenOffice.org and WorldLabel.com. The contest,
which ends October 13, offers a top prize of $750 to first place winners
who submit the best template or clipart design, along with cash and
other prizes to second through fifth place winners in both categories.

OpenOffice.org is accepting templates for four of its applications:
Writer, a word processor; Calc, a spreadsheet; Impress, a presentation
creator; and Draw, a graphics program. Judging is expected to take about
three weeks from the close of the contest."

Success Stories
#########################################################################

Munich begins Linux replacement of Windows
------------------------------------------
"Since Tuesday, the first 100 of the city's 14,000 PCs have been switched
from Microsoft's Windows operating system and Office applications to
Linux and OpenOffice."

Belgium ministries are evaluating OpenOffice.org
------------------------------------------------
According to the following article, the Belgium Ministry of Finance and
the Belgium Ministry of Justice are evaluating OpenOffice.org:

More schools take to open source
--------------------------------
"The largest deployment to date is the third phase of the government’s
PCs for Public Schools Program launched last month, which is deploying
some 12,000 personal computers worth P600 million to 1,200 public high
schools, Lallana said.

Unlike the first two phases of the program that used the proprietary
Windows operating system and Microsoft Office, the computers in phase
3 will be bundled with free and open source Fedora Linux and OpenOffice."

Featured News

The changing face of charts in OpenOffice.org
---------------------------------------------
"However, these types of improvements are refinements. What Chart 2 is
doing is correcting existing problems and preparing the base on which to
improve the existing system -- and these things, it appears to be doing
very well so far."

http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1000090

Nice OpenOffice.org feedback
----------------------------
"The features I appreciate in OpenOffice includes lack of weird
characters when I cut and paste text from OpenOffice Writer to an HTML
editor. Do that with Microsoft Word and you spend time finding and
fixing all the bizarre smart quotes and the like that don't transfer.
I also like the fact that OpenOffice Writer's word count function
(it's important to track the number of words for publications) gives
word count numbers for both the highlighted block of text and the full
document, while Microsoft Word only shows the count of the selected
text or full document.

One feature of OpenOffice makes me laugh at the poor design of Microsoft
Office. Have you ever tried to open a file in Word and accidentally
clicked an Excel spreadsheet instead? In Microsoft Office, the file
opens as garbage characters inside of Word. OpenOffice does it right
and starts OpenOffice Calc to properly handle the spreadsheet."

Slovak OpenSource Initiative to offer OpenOffice.org Training
-------------------------------------------------------------
"In August 2006, SKOSI started to co-operate with the Bratislava
School of Economics, where it is helping set up the Open Source Room
of Excellence (teaching OpenOffice, Linux, application development,
system administration, etc.)."

ESQutes for OpenOffice.org Calc
-------------------------------
"ESQutes for OpenOffice.org Calc! Yes, we now have a working Open
Office version for you to use. It's not completely done yet, but we
thought, that rather than make you wait months for us to get this out
the door, you would appreciate a working prototype. It should be bug
free, we didn't need to change any of our code to make it work. One of
our thoughtful users supplied a custom OpenOffice Basic wrapper, and
we are extremely pleased! We hope you are too. Learn more about
OpenOffice.org. Our download is here."

Tips & Tricks

OpenOffice Responses (Title Case menu)
--------------------------------------
"I mentioned in my Anybody But Microsoft column that it didn't because
that's not one of the options in the menu under Format > Change Case, as
are Upper Case and Lower Case. However, OpenOffice puts Title Case under
Format > Character > Font Effects (tab) > Effects dropdown > Title. Oh,
you can also find it by highlighting some text and hitting F11 to open
the Styles and Formatting popup. This is handy for some things, but
Title Case is way down a long list of options."

OpenDocument News Roundup

ODF gets a new community website
--------------------------------
"The OASIS international standards consortium on Sept. 12 launched a new
website, OpenDocument XML.org, aimed at being the official community
gathering place and information resource for the OpenDocument Format
(ODF). The site will feature blogs, forums, information, and news about
the ODF."

New document file formats explained
-----------------------------------
"Even if it looks as if there will be a format war between Open Document
and Open XML, users will be the winners, as the common basis of the file
types – XML – will mean more cross-application compatibility and
portability when using office documents."

Alfresco Unveils New Version Of Open Source Enterprise CMS
----------------------------------------------------------
"The rapid rate of innovation and delivery validates our approach and
the open source model versus proprietary vendors," said John Newton,
chief technology officer, Alfresco Software Inc. "Our commitment, not
only of open source, but to open standards such as JSR-170, ODF,
DOD 5015.2, Java, Web Services or REST architectures, provide customers
with real choice and flexibility across the whole ECM stack."

New IBM program helps computer students design for all users
------------------------------------------------------------
"IBM is also launching a contest that challenges students to propose
and design open source software for people with disabilities. To qualify,
entries must be based on a new international standard, called the
OpenDocument Format (ODF). Familiarity with ODF will be increasingly
important, as the format will be required by 50 percent of governments
and 20 percent of commercial organizations by 2010, according to the
Gartner research firm."
