N Korea moves against truce commission

North Korea has asked several countries, including Australia, New Zealand and other
allies of South Korea, to withdraw from the United Nations commission overseeing the
implementation of the Korean armistice.

The Military Armistice Commission was formed when the Korean war ended in 1953 with a
truce, which has never been converted into a formal peace treaty.

North Korea wants the armistice to be replaced by a peace treaty between itself and
the United States.

The South favours a peace treaty between the two Korean states.
