follows frequent violations of the Georgian airspace
from the Russian side.

RUSSIAN FEDERAL FORCES COMMAND CLAIMS GEORGIAN TROOPS
ARE FAR FROM FIGHTING CHECHEN MILITANTS

-Podoprigora noted that the militants claim no one
ousted them from Georgia, and the part of fighters
that had left Pankisi headed for Azerbaijan and
Turkey. The remaining gang groupings, in his words,
are not persecuted by Georgian task forces.

GROZNY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2002. /RIA Novosti
correspondent/ -- When the special operation by
Georgian units in Pankisi is over, Chechen militants
ousted from that region plan to return to their bases
in the mountains, Colonel Boris Podoprigora, Deputy
Commander of the Joint Group of Forces (OGV) in the
North Caucasus, told RIA Novosti.

In his words, the results of the interrogation of the
bandits detained near the Ingush village of Galashki
testify to such intentions.

Podoprigora reported that, according to the detained,
the Georgian authorities not only fail to fight
militants but even create favorable conditions for
them: in particular, humanitarian aid has been
regularly provided to them.

According to the OGV deputy commander, the Georgian
authorities also rendered the militants assistance in
receiving documents and refugee certificates issued by
the Department of the UN Supreme Commissar on
Refugees, while the very fact of their involvement in
gang groupings was not disclosed to UN
representatives.

Podoprigora noted that the militants claim no one
ousted them from Georgia, and the part of fighters
that had left Pankisi headed for Azerbaijan and
Turkey. The remaining gang groupings, in his words,
are not persecuted by Georgian task forces.

Podoprigora stated that despite the Georgian
authorities' desire to present the international
terrorist gang's incursion on Russian soil as the
success of the special operation, the main part of
militants are still in Georgia.

Georgian Refrains from Extradition of Chechen
Militants

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, September 28, 2002) - Russian
Deputy Chief Prosecutor Sergei Fridinski told the
reporters today that the Georgian side's statement
about the readiness to hand over 13 Chechens,
allegedly fighters, to the Russia, "is just words".

"I had a phone conversation with the Georgian Chief
Prosecutor [Nugzar Gabrichidze], after Georgia
announced that it will extradite Chechens to Russia.
But we did not received the precise answer when
exactly the extradition happens," Russian news
agencies quote Sergei Fridinski.

Georgian border guards detained the 13 armed Chechens
on August 3-5. They are in preliminary detention in
Tbilisi at the moment. Georgian law enforcers charge
them for illegal crossing the border with Russia and
carrying weapons and explosives.
