Georgia Prepares for Caspian Oil Boom

MOSCOW, October 14. Georgia has built a new oil
terminal at its Black Sea port of Poti in order to
boost Caspian oil shipments via the country. The
construction of four oil reservoirs and a berth marks
the beginning of a USD 30 million investment project.

The former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan,
and Turkmenistan transport oil first across the
Caspian Sea than via Georgia by rail. Investors in the
project include the Irish Channel Energy company, the
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and
the Black Sea Trade Development Bank of Greece, which
has invested its money without any governmental
guarantees.

The annual throughput capacity of the new terminal is
two million tonnes. The second phase of the project,
including the construction of another four reservoirs
in order to increase the annual capacity of the
terminal to four million tonnes or 40,000 barrels per
day is expected to be completed by June 2003.

The construction of storage facilities for bulk and
chemical cargoes is also being planned.
