Reuters November 30, 2009 Brown "to announce extra Afghan troops on Monday" LONDON: Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to confirm on Monday that Britain will send 500 more troops to Afghanistan as NATO-led forces step up their eight-year campaign against the Taliban. Sources said Brown is likely to tell parliament that conditions for an increase to 9,500, such as more help from other countries and enough equipment for the mission, have been met. The announcement, confirming a conditional pledge made in October, is expected at around 3:30 p.m. "The prime minister feels we have made real progress on burden-sharing in the past few weeks," Brown's spokesman said. U.S. President Barack Obama is widely expected on Tuesday to announce 30,000 extra soldiers for Afghanistan and Brown has asked other coalition countries to send about 5,000 more troops. Violence has worsened in Afghanistan this year, forcing a change in NATO strategy to try to stabilise conditions and allow for the eventual withdrawal of foreign troops from a war that is becoming unpopular on both sides of the Atlantic. Obama and Brown will hold talks via videophone later on Monday, Brown's spokesman said. ....
