Subject: Brand-X Browsers

There's a useful list of "obscure" browsers at:

http://www.dantobias.com/webtips/brand-x.html

While there, check out:

http://www.dantobias.com/cgi-bin/browser.pl

- -- it shouldn't take many visits for `rachne to score
higher than M$IE3 in the logs. She's already on a par
with IE6.

BTW Curtis, for this mail I pasted in URLs by first
A adding them to the Hotlist, F2 saving mail in mid
composition, H opening Hotlist, right-click or Shift
+ Enter to hilite URL, Ctrl+C to copy, back to mail and
Ctrl+V to paste. Clumsy, but it works. I use the Hotlist
as a temporary marshalling yard for links, with several
properly organized lists saved for various porpoises.

Regards,

Jake

Hi folks,

since many list members are interested and the zip file is only 4kB I
decided to post it on the list, You'll find it in the attachment. The
archive does not include Ghostscript and unfortunately I forgot the site
where it can be found, but if someone need it I could send the original
self extracting archive (warning: 2.6 MB, including fonts). Have a look
at the included readme file, too.
Have fun.

Hi!

For Ghostscript look at ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/ghost/aladdin/

If somebody has DJGPP and would compile the last Ghostscript, he is wellcome ;))))

AFAIK he's alive and well. He logs in often at arachne.cz so I assume he
isn't in the army. And about M$, I quote from the release notes from 1.0
beta 5 (16 february 1997):

"Microsoft offered me to move to Redmond and work for them - really, I am
not joking ;)"

Even if Michael stops, at this point, to develop it I still think
development will continue. Michael has stated that he will probably release
it as GPL when he feels it's time to do so. And if he looses the source
atleast 1.69 can be recreated.

One way would be to have several fields for files.

I think so, but I'll leave the answering to Glenn or Clarence ;-)
Personally I think Arachnes FTP is really bad, especially when you want to
download. I prefer the text-mode clients more myself.

I think this works:
ftp < input.txt
But I haven't tried it.

I downloaded it and unpacked it and located it in my search path.
Also I modified MIME.CFG as you have indicated. I did also
everything else as explained in your README.

It doesn't work for me. I get an error message that briefly flashes
in my screen saying that Alladin can't find some init file, gs_std
something. The error message appears too briefly for me to read it all
or to make any sense out of it.

I find an HTM file in C:\TEMP\ARACHNE.TMP having nothing more than this:

<html>
<head>
<title>Conversion from PDF file</title>
<body>
</body>
</html>

Do you have any idea as to what might be going wrong?

Regards,

Sam Heywood

I always like the one written by Erick Engelke (who actually
wrote the DOS WATTCP library, used by Arachne). He just released
a new build:

ftp://dark.uwaterloo.ca

Look for ftp.exe.

Other listers might like to know that Erick also released a dos
webserver. Find it at the same site.

Glenn, et alia ...

Arachne works just fine. It shows the Local IP. The "Local IP" is
different from the "Internet IP."

If you are dialing up, you don't *have* a Local IP! Only those on
network, or NIC for other purposes like the cable modem setup I run,
have a LOCAL IP.

You can take a look at the difference between Local IP & internet IP if
you'd like ... I put up a couple of screen shots that show both:

I also tried to figure out how to do FTP with CUTCP. I could not
find any documentation for FTP. The Telnet feature works fine.
If you have any documentation on how to do FTP with it, then please
send it to me or refer me to a URL.

I downloaded the webserver program. It looks very interesting, but the
documentation is very sparse and highly lacking in explanations. I have
no idea how to configure it. Has anybody on this list been able to run
this program?

Subject: Program Terminating

... or Terminating Program.

Has anyone else ever gotten this message [on the bottom line] when using
Arachne? I can't recall anything like that prior to v1.70r3 ...

It has happened numerous times under different circumstances, and I've
never been able to figure out what triggered it.

Today I found at least one trigger, and it makes no sense whatsoever.

I was writing mail, wanted to refer to a URL that was mentioned down at
the bottom of the message, so went to the bottom, used K-commands to
highlight, then went back to top where I was working and used K-C to
insert the URL.

The URL was highlighted, and when I tried to move the cursor to it to
UNhighlight, I discovered everything was locked up ... and on the bottom
line was the message Terminating Program.

3-finger salute was required.

Why did it do this???

Check an up-to-date list. Here's one that lists over 500 BBS's
that can be reached via telnet. It appears that the demise of
BBS's is overstated. This list is updated monthly and more BBS's
are being added all the time.

this seems to be a problem with Ghostscript. Perhaps You should isert an
"pause" statement into pdf2htm.bat after the line invoking GS that You
can read the error message.

yes, I found the problem, there was something wrong with the path
statements. If htmlgen.exe doesn't find any files it creates an empty html file.
I'm thinking about inserting an error message into the created htm file
when this happens.
I hope this is fixed with the new version I'll post with next mail upload.

According to a news article uploaded April 20th, but dated 24 dubna,
Michael is apparently involved with Linux Bazaar 2001 ... whatever that
is.

The message would imply that Michael was still alive, and not drafted or
bought, just a couple of days ago.

Yes, please do tell us how to do it.

Adding these 2 lines to mime.cfg converts PDF to plain text.(no graphics)

Invalid drive specified

- ------- end screenshot of output ----

If I run this by clicking on a PDF attachment found in an Arachne email
message, I will get an empty HTML file as before. Furthermore, I will
get error messages saying that it can't find the files it needs, even if
I include C:\PDF in the search path. I have made sure that all the files
it needs and asks for are there.

Maybe you should make prepare a list to indicate which files should go
in which directories. You might need to make some changes in your source
to take care of the problem of the "invalid drive specified". With my
setup I can run Arachme from either C:\ARACHNE or I can run her from my
ramdrive in D:\ARACHNE. If I don't know which files belong in which drives
and directories, then I cannot use this program.

Sam Heywood
