I get the 'X' character at the end of the output too.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# whatis apropos
apropos              (1)  - search the whatis database for stringsX

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# whatis --version
whatis from man-1.6b

the 'X' is also in the whatis-database. for example:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# grep apropos /usr/man/whatis
apropos              (1)  - search the whatis database for stringsX
