Actually - some good news. Using libtool CVS, automake-1.6 and autoconf 2.53 I've now been able to build, php-4.2.2 with pspell support, using the new aspell - which wasn't possible last time I tried, without modifying config.m4 in ext/pspell and adding -lstdc++ to LIBS.
