Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, APR 18 (NPN):

North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) Monday celebrated “World Heritage Day”
cum “Horizon Series Programme” at NEZCC complex, After launching the book
titled “Northeast India, of its land people and culture” authored by Aiyushman
Dutta chief guest on the occasion Geoffrey Yaden, Editor Nagaland Post
described it as fruition of one and half years of dedicated work. Referring to
the author, who is also a journalist working with The Sentinel in Assam, the
chief guest said Aiyushman has shown that all journalists are not armchair
specialists but also capable of graduating into specialists in their own right.
Complimenting the hard work done by Aiyushman from Assam for bringing out the
book, the chief guest said such endeavours are fine examples of promoting
understanding among people of the region. Saying that Aiyushman has set an
example to the people of other states, the chief guest urged upon Nagas to also
take up such ventures in recording the rich cultural history of their
communities.
Geoffrey described the north east as a rich garden of various cultures and
traditions and having the largest tribal communities in the country. He said in
the ancient times, tribals had only oral traditions to record their history and
culture and the sources are dwindling. Therefore, he said researches and
records of various facets of tribal life being written in text and graphics
were invaluable towards preserving tribal history adding it was time that
people from the region projected their own people to the outside world.
He also reminded that preservation of culture was not about history but about
seeking to understand how our forefathers saw themselves and their environment.
He said any community that has no knowledge of its roots stand the risk of
being uprooted and overcome by other cultures.
Earlier, delivering the welcome address Director NEZCC Kamei IPS, said the
occasion to launch the book was also to coincide with World Heritage Day. Kamei
said the NEZCC has been striving to preserve the rich cultural traditions of
the north east through various activities.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Joint Director NEZCC Tali.
Highlights included cultural presentations by Ao, Lotha and Chakhesang cultural
troupes.
