Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters congratulates President Barak Obama on the historic election results and winning the US Presidency for another four years with an overwhelming majority. While the experts are still analysing and debating the election issues, the very fact that he won the election with the support of 91% of Black, 71% of Hispanic, 55% women votes etc, simply shows that under his progressive leadership, the Democratic party is fast becoming a progressive and liberal Peoples party of the USA of the twenty first century. I am sure we are going to see more of his progressive policies in the field of foreign affairs where he had aleady been pursuing a more humanistic policy of positive engagement of resolving issues through dialog rather than confrontation, supporting democracy where practical and respecting all countries as equal partners. With that in view, it is no wonder that he has already announced his plan to visit Myanmar by the end of this month. This may bring great opportunites for the people of North East India who are sure to see some benefits out of this transformation of its neighbour to a fully democratic nation. This is sure to bring more opportunities for business and cultural exchange for the people of North East India with its neighbours taking advantage of a new Look East policy that is fast evolving. In the coming years, Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters will look for opportunites in that line that it can leverage for the benifit of North East India.
