JFA denouncesCM Gogoi’s comment on Padma awardee
Guwahati, 29January: Ridiculing Assam chief minister’s comment over Padma award
recipientsof the State including senior journalist Dhirendra Nath Bezboruah,
the JournalistsForum Assam (JFA) expressed shock that a veteran politician like
Tarun Gogoican publicly malign the distinguished personalities, who were
declared aswinner of Padma Shri by the Union government on the occasion of
67thRepublic Day.
CM Gogoi on 28January 2016, while addressing a press conference at Dispur
expressed hisdispleasure that the Centre had not recognized anyone for Padma
awards from thelist of Assam government. He also asserted that the Centre had
thus (ignoringthe State government’s list of 28 personalities) shown disrespect
to the federalstructure of the country.
The chiefminister even questioned, ‘On whose recommendations were the Padma
awardsgiven? Was it Bharatiya Janata Party leaders who recommended the four
names chosenfor this year’s awards?’.
“Maligning asenior most author-journalist like DN Bezboruah, who once led
Editor’s Guild ofIndia, the chief minister has shown his utter disrespect to
the media fraternity,”said a statement issued by JFA president Rupam Barua and
secretary NavaThakuria adding that Gogoi’s outburst does not suit his present
politicalposition and stature.
The forumalso endorsed the reaction of veteran columnist Bezboruah that Gogoi
had latelydeveloped a ‘habit of shooting off his mouth’ and the forum too feels
remorsefulthat ‘we live in a State where the chief minister talks so
irresponsibly’.
The JFAfinally questioned the commitment of the State government while
recommending thename of reputed personalities for various Padma awards in the
last 15 years duringGogoi’s chief ministership and commented that personality
like Bezboruah should have beenoffered the honour decades back.
