Yes all firewalls are software running on a piece of hardware. Pretty semantic though. Not all hardware is create equal though.
As long as there is a firewall, then all is well. That is the point regardless of what flavor you like. I think you will look long for a dedicated filter module that has more features than netfilter;). Using netfilter is way more powerful, in my opinion.
