You are correct,  and I apologize for taking the time on this. The culprit was a code (modify-syntax-entry ?\\ "w")

I know I needed it years ago for something, commenting it out makes everything works.

IIUC, AUCTeX actually does what you're looking for.  Or am I missing something?
