I think you are right.

Actually looks like the whole thing was generated by a bug in usb urb.c!
Patching the 3.3 kernel with this patch https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/2/2/427
solved the problem with the XO-1 usb wifi and the layered file system!

Now why usb debugging could affect the aufs layered system in such a strange 
way so the problem will manifest only when the firmware file was at the bottom 
layer,... I leave up to the experts :-)
