Allow tabs to be dragged – as in IE8 and a lot of other applications.
Make them stackable (like task bar in Windows itself).

I think the first of my suggestions is the preferable option of the 3 – and
hugely easier to implement than #2, or your suggestion.

Probably the easiest thing to do (and probably possible in current VS
versions) is to configure a key-combination/macro to open the
alternative file.

I do like to have my files arrange as the feature request implies, but
I (obviously) just do it manually.

On a slightly-related matter; the person to sell me a tiny little
screen that attaches to my regular monitor (perhaps above, perhaps to
the right or left) will be a millionare. Then I can put little misc
things on there (like debug windows, and so on). Maybe have a whole
series of them, and sell them for perhaps $10, plug-in-able via USB.
There's your business plan; I wait patiently for investment monies.
